Season's Eatings

Ahhhhh...yes, it's that time of year again. You know, that time when it starts with Halloween and becomes a virtual eating orgy up through the first day of the year?

Somehow, we just can't stop ourselves and there's always that justification monster around every corner. You know that monster.

"You've worked hard all year, you deserve this."

"When are you going to get the chance to really indulge?"

"You don't have any vices, what the hell ENJOY YOURSELF! It's only one time a year!"

It's safe for you to know some of the "basics" to help you throughout this Season's Eatings.

As we continue to put off our good exercise and eating habits well into the New Year and justify in our minds in the name of work and last minute details of co-worker gift exchanging, and Holiday shopping as if in our last dying wish these would be the things that haunt us on our deathbeds, I wanted to take a moment to give you some "food for thought."

Here are 4 things you need to be cognizant of when you are embarking on your new found, new year diet:

  1. People who go on a diet, also go off a diet. Consider this: Whenever you embark upon a diet (especially anunhealthy one) when you choose to go off of it, the weight you gain back will largely be fat weight. Not only will you be gaining back the weight you lost, it will be wasted effort because you've set yourself behind because fat weight is virtually useless weight. It doesn't do anything besides take up space, and it's unsightly.
  2. Focus on body composition, not what the scale says. It makes a bigger difference in the long run. Diets have actually contributed to America's weight problem because most diets are associated with extreme hunger and restriction.
  3. You should strive to eat every 3 - 3 1/2 hours during the day to keep your hormone levels steady for fat release. A little story:

How a Farmer Fattens a Pig A farmer fattens a pig by starving it all day, not feeding it while they are forced to run around and keep moving. Then at night, the farm hands bring a huge container of "junk food" called "slop" to the pigs. They allow the pigs to eat as much as they want as long as they want. Sound familiar? Don't we do this too to some degree?

We don't eat all day, work all day long, and then sit down to a huge meal at night, eating enough for 5 people or maybe even worse, we eat something with no nutritional value to "boost" our energy because we don't feel we have any. This includes sugar laden foods which only serve as a detriment to our weight loss goals. No wonder we look like pigs!

Starving the pig all day long slows down the pigs metabolism. Therefore, when they are allowed to eat as much as they want, they hoard and hold onto the calories, and gain tons of weight in no time fast. Starving works to decrease your weight, but I guarantee that once you get down to your "desired" weight, you will have dull, flacid skin, dry brittle hair, no muscle tone and you'll wonder why you still have cellulite. But, you'll weigh what you want! Remind yourself to eat every 3 hours. Your body will get used to these feedings and then your metabolism will skyrocket as eating is thermic.

4. Plan for a lifestyle change not a diet. Gradually introduce healthier eating!!
