Sue has been a trusted friend, colleague, and client for some years now.

Sue has an innate style with impressive knowledge on how to dress many different sizes and shapes to bring out your personal best and sense of style, even if you thought you never had any. Everyone has a sense of style and Sue's the perfect person to help you discover and flaunt it.

Do You Know What's in Your Closet?

I spend a lot of time helping women with their image through their wardrobes. Our first priority is to reacquaint them with the contents of their closets! It is no surprise that most women’s closets are pretty disorganized and are very telling about how they make their wardrobe choices. I never cease to be amazed about how many wardrobe pieces have never been worn and STILL have the original price tags on.

It is well-known that most of us wear 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time. That leaves a lot of unused “real estate” left in our closets. It is important for us to wear what we have and wear what we buy. Otherwise, we are potentially spending money on things that will become “extinct” very quickly.

Practicing What I Preach

Tempted by the availability of new and fresh Spring styles and limited space available for “new acquisitions”, I did a closet review of my own wardrobe. This past weekend, I went through my current Spring and Summer wardrobe pieces.

My own style has evolved during the past few years. I wear mostly casual pieces that can easily transition to evening attire with jewelry or a jacket. While my personal style is classic and somewhat edgy, I have found that several pieces in my closet no longer reflect my personal style and lifestyle. Furthermore, fashion silhouettes have slightly changed over the past few years and some items are simply no longer flattering on me.

Not only did I go through my jackets, blouses, pants and skirts, I also went for boots, athletic wear, scarves, belts, handbags and jewelry—everything that takes up space. I tried on nearly everything since my warmer weather items have not been worn for half a year.

Every time I do this I get more enlightened! I have reacquainted myself with my closet and now have in mind what I really need to freshen up my wardrobe for Spring!

Based on my own satisfying experience, I made a list of my top wardrobe pruning recommendations.

Ten Guidlines for a Gratifying Wardrobe Review:

  1. Do a seasonal wardrobe review 2-4 times per year. Get a full length mirror.
  2. During your review evaluate the fit, style, color and flatter potential.
  3. Include all pieces of clothing in your overhaul. Don’t forget to review your accessories and even athletic wear.
  4. If you have NOT worn an item for more than 2 years or it no longer fits into your lifestyle, it’s time to let it go.
  5. If you have more than ONE size of clothing in your closet, consider the practicality (and cost) of tailoring vs. buying a replacement.
  6. While classic styles last, some silhouettes may slightly change enough to not be flattering. Honestly critique your reflection, not the memories associated with the item.
  7. Don’t toss it! Donate:
    • Dress for Success for both business professional
    • and casual attire
    • Goodwill
  8. Shop your closet by trying new ways to put outfits together. How successful you are creating new outfits will help you determine where the “holes” are in your wardrobe.
  9. Create a shopping list to “Shop with Intent”, once you get a better feel for what your closet is lacking. This will eliminate shopping mistakes.
So next weekend carve out some time for your closet! It will be the best exercise you can do for yourself.
