Velma's LeanZine, Issue #012 -- October - Fall Is In The Air!!
October 07, 2013
Fall is in the air...
Delve into the season of fall. We've been weathering some super warm days this season somewhere in the 80's here lately. I try to cherish each warm day, but I also appreciate the change in seasons.
To celebrate the change in seasons, I will be running the Turkey Trott here in Columbus for Thanksgiving Day with my two boys. We had so much fun running it last year that we are making it a yearly tradition to run it.
I will also be training people for the race and I would love for you to join us. I can train you online, or you can train with me in person. Details are going only to those who are interested, so you will have to contact me directly in response to this request, or from FaceBook or Twitter(see those links below at the end of this ezine). If you're interested and you haven't friended me on FaceBook or Twitter, then I suggest you hop on over so you can receive more details as they unfold, but you will have to inbox me to be included. That way you will know the meeting times and locations for the runs.
The Turkey Trott is a 5 mile(8k) race. If you are not a runner, you do not have to run the race. You can walk which is a 2.5 mile "Walk & Talk". I will have a volunteer to head up the walkers for the race if you let me know that you will be walking it. I will not if we don't have enough walkers interested.
You can bring pets, children, baby strollers, your favorite aunt, your not-so-favorite aunt.....just remember that whatever you bring to the race that you'll have to lug it around with you for 5 miles!
See the link below for more details on the race:
This is an early morning race, so you will have plenty of time to return home and enjoy your usual eating and festivities for the rest of the day. I will say that the food is that much more satisfying after you've put in your mileage! It's really a great beginning to a day of usual overindulgence. So please consider it. There is a free pumpkin pie awarded to the first 1000 participants!
This is the time of year when I just want to kick my clients in the butt. Truthfully. They are disinterested, unfocused, unmotivated and probably wishing I would just die and in disbelief that they pay me for what they have to put up with. LoL!
In case you haven't noticed and think it's just you, please realize that fall is a hard time to stay focused. If you haven't established a routine that is part of who you are at this point, it is amazingly simple to completely backslide back into your former life.
I admit as a trainer it is SO difficult to watch you backslide because I feel responsible. I understand it from both sides as someone who has slid back many times and as the motivator. I completely empathize with both ends.
I have an admitted advantage and that is teaching. One of my faults/strengths is showing up for someone else. If I know that there are people who depend on me to show up, that is a far more motivating factor than just doing it for myself. That's how I get mine in and keeps me accountable to myself and you.
After training you and since I'm already there, I just get my own workout in. This certainly does not mean that it makes it any easier for me, just so you know....So, I know I will get mine in and that's when my concern becomes you and helping you make it part of your life. Permanently.
When you keep efforts moving in a positive direction, it becomes easier the next time to make the choice to continue to move in that positive direction. Your continual efforts to move positively helps you gain trust in yourself each time to habitually show up for yourself and then it just becomes part of who you are. When you fail to make choices in that positive direction, you begin to trust yourself less and less until the backslide becomes too big of a mountain to climb forward again. It breaks my heart to be a witness to this. Just don't give up wherever you are, and keep putting one foot in front of the other. Victory awaits!
Unfortunately, from this point it is a sleigh ride into the holidays, and there is no stopping that freight train once your festivities begin in your life and the excuses/interruptions are non-stop and appear to be worthy of cutting out your fitness plans altogether. I just want you to be aware when you are attempted to skip. One day can easily become 2 weeks.
See the timeless article below that I've written many years ago that still holds so much truth even today. I hope you find it to be a useful motivator.
